Yesterday Houston's city counsel discussed changing the curfew from midnight to 11:00 pm for people under the age of 17. Personally, I don't think I would want my school aged child out at after 11:00pm on a school night. But isn't that for me to decide?
Ask the mother who was driving to the police station this morning to pick up her 16-year old son. Last night(actually, this morning) he was arrested on drug, weapon, and auto-theft charges. He was arrested at 3:00 am, three hours after the current curfew of midnight. So, if midnight didn't stop the crime, why do people think 11:00 pm will?
But there is a bigger problem. How exactly would the police department deal with teens out at night when they can't deal with criminal immigrants? What would happen if they pulled over a teenage criminal immigrant after 11:00pm? Detain him for breaking curfew, or set him free because he is a criminal immigrant?
My message to City Counsel: Stop being so stupid and start protecting the citizens of your city. Now.
